Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I)

US and the Soviet Union negotiated agreements to restrict and limit the manufacture of missiles that could carry nuclear weapons. some of the agreements both countries promised was not to convert land-based launchers of older types or light ICBMs into land-based launchers for heavy ICBMs of types deployed after 1965. Also limited the numbers of submarines to those operational and under construction and the date of signature of the agreement.
